Project Management: A Juggling Act

By PhilWebServices, Oct. 21, 2009

It doesn’t take much to figure out that project management is one of the most challenging jobs in the IT industry. It is a continuous juggling act, simultaneously managing the four major elements of any web development project: money, time, resources and scope. The bulk of the responsibility and pressure can be quite overwhelming, considering the fact that the success of the project would greatly depend on the project manager. Amid the endless deadlines to beat, anxious clients to appease, critical decisions that have to be made, and hundred and one concerns to attend to in between, I have to say, there is never a dull moment in my line of work.

Since I started out as a programmer for 2 years. My experience gave me a better insight on the web design and development process. I must say I have had more than my fair share of challenges. However, my background as a programmer prepared me to rise up to the tasks, most of which are interrelated with what I usually deal with now in managing projects, especially in dealing with clients.

My technical background also helped me in a way that I can easily grasp what exactly the clients want for their project. Since some of our clients do not exactly have a technical background, it can quite difficult to correctly interpret what they have in mind and the particular design concept they prefer. This comes with the territory, and you need to have patience that can rival that of the saint. Collaboration and constant feed backing is highly important in making sure the client’s vision is clearly interpreted and executed.
